China opposes the weaponization of and an arms race in outer space

Xinhuanet, Vienna, June 11 (reporter Wang Tengfei)-China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna 11th Cheng Jingye said at the United Nations Committee on the peaceful uses of outer space, China opposes the weaponization of and an arms race in outer space, and guidelines relating to activities in outer space should be based on the principle of equal participation, guided by the basic principles of space law.

Cheng Jingye, United Nations Committee on the peaceful uses of outer space, held in Vienna on the same day the 57th session, said that long-term sustainability of activities in outer space are the current focus problems in the field of outer space, China has been actively involved in the work. China believes that the relevant guidance documents should be developed based on the principle of equal participation, guided by the basic principles of space law, on the basis of peaceful uses, to target a win-win cooperation, co-ordination of different countries ' concerns, and promote sustainable development of capacity in space technology and applications.

He said that human activities in outer space carried out so far has more than 60 years, rising to the challenges faced by the space security. China has consistently opposed the weaponization of outer space and an arms race in outer space. We advocate in the areas of confidence-building measures in outer space, enhance mutual trust, reduce miscalculation. Meanwhile, China is committed to working with all parties to negotiate to prevent the weaponization of and an arms race in outer space of international treaties, and eliminate the threats to security in outer space. China is willing to strengthen cooperation with all parties, to achieve peace, security and development efforts in outer space.

Cheng Jingye also described China's technology in this field development. He said that satellite application in China in the past year, and manned much progress, Beidou system fields, space technology is widely used in meteorological, oceanographic, disaster relief, environmental protection and other fields. He said that, in 2015, China will launch a new generation of navigation satellites, Beidou system began "step three" network building.

The same day, the United Nations Committee on the peaceful uses of outer space at its 57th meeting, held at United Nations Headquarters in Vienna to discuss current international issues relevant to the peaceful uses of outer space.
