在6日政协文艺界别的分组讨论间隙，记者与张国立的对话，就从“十三五”规划纲要(草案)里的极地科考项目开始。
“我注意到规划纲要(草案)中有一项重大工程是在南北极新建科考站，建造先进的破冰船，提升南极航空能力等等。身为一名‘老南极’，我特别高兴看到国家这么重视科考事业。”张国立说，“极地科考是一个国家综合国力的体现，我为我们国家这些年各方面的长足进步感到由衷的自豪。”
27年前，作为电视剧《长城向南延伸》摄制组成员，张国立高举着五星红旗，第一次踏上了南极大陆。
离开南极27年后，张国立再一次从记者带来的最新照片里，看到了那个熟悉而又陌生的中山站，言语间尽是满满的回忆：“变化太大了，我们当年建站的时候，真的是一穷二白，一切从零开始。”
1989年1月的一天，中国“极地号”科考船在接近预定登陆地点几海里处，遭遇特大冰崩，大大小小的冰块将船首砸出裂缝，船身被困在浮冰之中无法前进。
危急之下，船长下令：共产党员留下坚守，其他队员弃船上岸。
接到弃船命令的张国立，第一反应是跑到船尾看国旗：“那面国旗已经快被风吹成条了，可我心里舍不得，觉得这条船就是国土，我绝不能放弃。”
那天的场景，令张国立永生难忘。
“船长发令，共产党员要到最危险的地方去。没想到一排排的人都站了出来，‘我是共产党员！’‘我是共产党员！’的声音此起彼伏。我一边拍摄，眼泪一边就流下来了。我不是共产党员，可在那种生死关头，我真切地感受到一个共产党员应该是什么样的。”
幸运的是，几天之后，科考船最终有惊无险，渡过了这次难关。
张国立感慨地说，只有亲自参加过南极科考，才能真正领会“南极精神”的真谛——为国为民、无私奉献、坚忍不拔。
科考队人手有限，张国立和其他摄制组成员都要先完成队里的建设工作，再利用休息时间拍摄，困了就钻进睡袋往冰面上一躺。
从爆破手到混凝土工，再到电焊工……他边学边干，手套不知换了多少双，冻裂的伤口不知添了多少道，“我们当时一点都没觉得苦，一心要为国家把科考站建好”。
1989年2月下旬，中国南极中山站在一个多月的紧张建设后正式落成，五星红旗第一次在南极大陆拉斯曼丘陵上冉冉升起。100余名中山站的缔造者，统一面向祖国的方向举手敬礼。
那一刻，见证了中山站从一片茫茫冰原上拔地而起的他，又一次泪流满面：“队员们对祖国的那种真情流露，是任何漂亮的口号都无法言说的。”
虽然离开南极已经27年，张国立说，他仍然时刻关注着我国海洋事业的发展。
“十三五”规划纲要(草案)中提出要实施海洋重大工程，建设海洋强国，张国立对此充满期待：“当年在南极看到发达国家的核动力破冰船在冰面上畅通无阻，我们非常羡慕，梦想着什么时候自己也能拥有这么先进的科考装备就好了。一个国家只有科技实力、工业实力都强大的时候才能被称为强国，从这点来看， 我们和发达国家之间的差距已经越来越小。”
