据了解，这个地方是首次发现大熊猫。南箐乡属于相岭山系，与周边保护区无走廊带相连。越西县曾经在附近的瓦岩乡发现大熊猫，虽然大熊猫喜欢独居，但彼此不会相隔太远。随着天保工程、退耕还林等林业工程的实施，越西县的生态植环境正在进一步好转，南箐一带形成了成片的箭竹林，有适合熊猫栖息的条件，大熊猫在南箐乡出现，说明越西县的熊猫栖息地正在扩大。
目前，保护区管理处正在着手对该区域进行深入的野外调查，了解该区域内大熊猫的分布状况。
