电视专题片通过对美国及世界其他各国媒体的报道集成，列举了美国无视本国人民人权的种种行径：2015年美国超过56万人无家可归，其中包括25%的未成年人；关押着2696名女囚的罗维尔监狱充斥着腐败、折磨囚犯和性虐待等丑闻；女性面临职场歧视，而且美国是唯一没有立法明确规定带薪产假的工业化国家，同时，女性遭受不同形式的性骚扰和性侵犯；全球只剩美国一个国家没有批准联合国《儿童权利公约》；美国15岁以上因伤致死的青少年中，1/4死于枪击事件；美国联邦调查局利用其特权强迫互联网公司未经法庭批准向其提供用户信息，包括全部的网络浏览记录；从司法公正、政治权利、劳动权利、基本生活保障，一直到妇女儿童权利，在几乎所有人权问题上，号称“大熔炉”的美国都是双重标准。

人权保障没有最好，只有更好。正视并切实改善人权问题，是人类文明进步的重要标志，也是当代国际社会的共同追求。正如人权问题专家安东尼奥·吉纳塔在片中强调：“我期望，美国看看自己的人权纪录，并且改进人权纪录。说其他国家应该改进人权状况，然而自己却不改善自己的状况，这的确是很虚伪的。”
