芬兰安全公司F-Secure的首席研究管Mikko Hypponen表示，在他从事网络安全工作的25年时间里，他明显发现黑客的类型在不断地增加，黑客的动机也变得多种多样，在最初自己进入网络安全这个领域里的时候，黑客们并没有明确的动机，他们选择攻击目标是源于他们能力的范围。但目前黑客已经可以明确的分出类型，目前可以分为五大类型：
善意的黑客，他们入侵他人的系统是希望可以发现漏洞，并促使人们及时弥补这些漏洞；
黑客活动家。他们的动机带有明显的政治性，但并不总是如此；
国家情报机构的人员；

网络犯罪分子。
