然而，799元红米Note2将联发科又打回到千元机原型。红米Note 2首发，联发科股价大跌，台湾媒体将矛头直指小米，称其“将台湾最新的高科技芯片当地摊货贱卖”。
新发布的曦力X20依然承载着联发科的高端心。易观智库分析师朱大林分析，当前手机芯片市场的主要竞争者在技术竞争上各家都能够支撑，要冲击高端市场，一方面是品牌的影响力，另一方面是价格把控。“芯片只是当前低利润硬件生态的一个环节，单冲击高端市场会面临很大压力。厂商要结合自身条件，选择未来的发展方向。”
郭德英告诉记者，从眼前来看，VR开始流行，FHD的颗粒感很强，现有的很多硬件计算能力不足，不能很好支持VR。另一方面，功耗仍是手机处理器的痛点。从这个层面上看，曦力X20在这些问题上都进行了很好的改良。但朱大林认为，从市场来看，厂商和消费者的消费心理并不容易改变，联发科定位中低端、高通定位中高端的品牌形象相对固化，冲击高端市场依然困难。
2015年，联发科营收2132.55亿元新台币（约为421.61亿元人民币），同比增长近0.1%。几乎停滞的收入增长，使联发科在品牌和收入上，不得不选择收入。
朱大林称，面临智能手机增长乏力，除了在下行市场环境中审慎维护营收，在新兴市场寻找新的增长点是芯片厂商的普遍选择。“物联网市场的芯片厂商也屈指可数，很多硬件厂商由手机转型过来，联发科会有一定的市场份额，但冲高依然困难”。
联发科芯片未来技术布局的趋势主要围绕深度学习、虚拟现实和5G三个方面。朱尚祖介绍，X20芯片目前具备通过声音和图像认知来进行身份识别的深度学习功能。他认为，未来智能手机演化方向是全能手机，VR产品会逐渐提升性能并普及。
“接下来的产品不管是手机还是其他，都会提升图形处理和软件的优化来符合下一代VR的需求，我们会持续投入”。在5G方面，朱尚祖表示目前已经和日本电信运营商NTT DOCOMO合作，争取并在5G商用时第一时间推出相关产品。
