3月18日凌晨3时许，有市民向合肥警方报警称，在该市合作化路与望江路交口南侧500米附近，有两辆轿车相碰，撞得很严重，有人卡在车内。
接到报警后，民警迅速赶赴现场，同时通知120急救车。经120医护人员现场查看，发现1名年轻男子已经死亡，4名伤者被紧急送往医院进行抢救，其中2人经抢救无效死亡。
经警方初步调查，两名伤者分别是别克车驾驶人汪某和纳智捷轿车乘坐人王某某。据两人称，事发当日凌晨2点左右，他们驾车在金寨路与望江路交口偶遇，驾驶纳智捷轿车的驾驶人吕某与坐在别克轿车副驾驶位置的刘某发生过纠纷，还打过架。一见吕某，刘某让汪某赶快驾车离开，吕某驾车紧随其后，当两车高速行驶到合作化路与望江路交口南侧500米附近，因两车互别方向，导致两车失控同时撞到合作化路高架桥76号桥墩，造成了3人死亡、2人受伤的后果。
