军事专家曹卫东介绍称，所谓模块化，就是将数万吨的航母分成几段，分别在不同的船厂建造，然后这些分段在一个船厂进行组合。这种建造技术的优点是可以大大缩短工期，因为数个工厂可以同时开工，齐头并进建设所负责分段，随后再进行组装即可。若是这些分段在同一个工厂建造，可能花费数倍的时间。我国航母若采用这样的建造技术，可以大大缩短建造时间，让航母早日下水。
新航母吨位可能超越辽宁舰，作战能力更强
央视报道称，国防部此前公开国产航母排水量约5万吨，但并未说明是标准排水量、空载排水量，还是满载排水量。美国《战略之页》网站的文章认为，该舰的排水量应该在6.5万吨，长度大约为305米。专家认为，001A型航母排水量应该会比已经服役的辽宁舰大一些，而且该舰在隐身性、动力系统等方面都应该会有改进。

曹卫东称，我国航母目前采用常规动力，其燃气轮机等设备可能会采用性能更好、更先进的国产设备，动力性能更好，航速更快，从而能为舰载机起飞提供更大的升力，利于舰载机搭载更多弹药或燃油，增加舰载机的续航能力或攻击力。新航母可能增达机库面积，加大甲板，使其搭载的飞机数量更多，作战能力更强。
“一艘航母的寿命一般在50年左右，舰载机的寿命只有30年，所以新型航母一定会搭载至少两款舰载战斗机，也就是说，当歼-15淘汰时，该航母还会换装新型舰载战斗机，如隐形战机或无人机等，新型航母设计时一定会考虑这些因素。”曹卫东如是说。
我国航母未来发展方向应该是核动力
曹卫东还指出，核动力航母相比常规动力航母有很多优点，如续航能力长，速度快，可以省出更多空间搭载舰载机。而且核动力航母能产生更大的电力，可为电磁导轨跑、激光武器等新能源武器提供动力。从我国的国防需求来看，如果从常规动力航母提升到核动力航母，对我国海上安全和海军的作战体系有好处，可以更好地执行远海护卫任务，加大防御纵深，更好地维护国家的远海利益，应该说是航母发展的方向。“但这并不是说我国马上就要建造核动力航母，而是说未来核动力航母将取代常规动力航母。”
