何继刚表示，开设数学这门课程最初的出发点是想培养学生有一个数学的眼光，让学生有一个数学的思维，能够用数学解决一些实际问题，帮助学生继续学习，在未来的发展能够发挥作用就可以了，但在他的教学过程中，他发现不少学生并不热爱这门学科，很多学生是在有强大外力的影响下去学习，并非是由心去热爱学习这门学科。
“有很多优秀的学生就是学不好数学，但不代表他们不优秀，可能他们对数学就是没有兴趣，不愿意投入那么多时间，如果我们能把数学的标准降低一些，可能这样的学生会学得很好，还是目前的评价体系过于单一。”何继刚指出，一张试卷并不能真正做到确定学生是否有数学的眼光？是否有一定的思维能力？在后期学习过程中，数学知识是否够用？大众数学是应该针对不同的人群，动态地去让学生学到有用的数学，在这新的课改中应当呈现。“我建议，适当降低一点难度，让高考对数学的要求不要那么高，数学也可以考得容易一点，这样就可以让所有人都喜欢学习数学。”
在提到新的课程标准修改中，课程设计了必修和选修，其中必修针对所有学生，作为毕业的要求，只要完成了必修即可高中毕业。
“必修课程应大众化，只要学到数学知识，达到基本的数学素养即可，这是属于非常大众化的课程，作为每一个公民必须掌握的。”何继刚指出，选修分为一和二，其中选修一与必修合在一起，是高考的内容，选修二分为5种可选的课程，如A针对理工类，B针对人文学科......E就是校本课程，不同的人学习不同的数学，让数学课程设置多样化。
