刘福昌老人，1925年出生，贵州省遵义地区鲁班镇小水村人。1944年11月入伍，当过中国远征兵、解放军战士，参加过渡江和解放浙江、福建等战斗战役，并远征云南、浴血奋战缅甸，先后荣立两次三等功、一次二等功。1955年复员退伍，1971年自愿请命到鲁班烈士陵园守陵至今。入选“我推荐、我评议身边好人”活动中国好人榜名单。
说起刘福昌老人，遵义红色革命老区人民都会肃然起敬。在鲁班镇烈士陵园一间不足二十平米的小屋里，“抗战英雄民族脊梁，功昭日月国人共仰”的锦旗震撼人心，这是刘福昌老人一生光辉写照。
当谈到红军长征时期鲁班场战役时，刘福昌老人声情并茂地讲起了那场战斗历程。1935年3月，中央红军以全部主力与国民党3个师在距贵州省茅台镇约40公里的鲁班场展开激战。躲在山林中的他，亲眼目睹了战斗的惨烈，那惊心动魄的战斗场面、震耳欲聋的枪炮声，令他刻骨铭心，让他对牺牲的红军产生了敬仰之情。10岁的他从此下定决心，长大也要干革命，当红军。 1944年11月，日军入侵黔南，先后窜扰荔波、三合、独山、八寨、都匀等5个县，国民党军队全线溃败。19岁的刘福昌被抓充当壮丁，编入国民党54军81师无线电排，开始了他的军旅生涯。后来跟着54军去云南打日本鬼子，一直打到缅甸。
老人感慨道，“刚被抓去当壮丁的时候，打日本鬼子，斗志高昂，后来打内战，心里很不是滋味。在辽沈战役中被打败后我们离开了锦州。国民党部队节节败退，部队里很多人都有投诚的念头，我们全团官兵也在阵前起义了……”1948年，刘福昌在团长带领下毅然起义，成为中国人民解放军第三野战军10兵团第9纵队（后来的中国人民解放军第28军）的一名战士，在解放战争中英勇顽强，荣立两次三等功、一次二等功。
到了1954年，刘福昌从部队复员回乡，担任小水乡武装部长，上任不久，他感到自己文化低，工作起来力不从心，主动辞职在家成为一名勤劳善良的淳朴农民。1971年的一天，刘福昌走进当时的仁怀区区委书记办公室，书记望着他说：“打算派你去守烈士陵园，你愿不愿意？”刘福昌坚定地回答：“我去！”刘福昌从此来到鲁班红军烈士陵园，再也没有离开过，这一守就是45年。45年来，无论冬秋雨雪，刘福昌总是在天刚蒙蒙亮时，就提着竹扫帚出屋，用两个多小时的时间，把1500多平方米的草坪、石阶、走廊彻底打扫干净。日复一日，年复一年，从未间断。烈士陵园最初只有8棵柏树，45年来，刘福昌栽树浇花，亲手植下2000多棵树木，30多个品种的花草栽满30多个花台和100多个花盆。在烈士陵园对面的斜坡上，老人还用黄杨木栽出了一个大大的党徽图案。如今，鲁班红军烈士陵园柏木森森，绿草茵茵，红军烈士的英魂在这里得到了安息。刘福昌付出了自己后半生的全部心血，与红军烈士朝夕为伴，红军烈士陵园已经成为了他的生命支柱。
“是什么力量使您坚守这片净土，什么精神使您守护烈士忠骨？”面对笔者的一个个叩问，刘福昌老人说：“我家五辈都是贫农，受地主压迫，我亲眼看见红军长征途中发生在家乡的那场血战，英勇无畏的红军将士用生命和鲜血换来了今天的幸福生活，我愿为红军烈士守墓，在清贫中坚守自己的那份宁静与快乐。” 如今，老人每月工资加上退伍补助也只有1000元的收入。虽然清贫，老人并无怨言。2002年隆冬，长征文化研究会创立者桂向东来到鲁班镇红军烈士陵园，把兜里仅有的500多元钱拿出来给老人，被老人婉言拒绝。老人说：“你要是真有这个心，就为红军走过的地方多做点实实在在的事情吧！”鲁班镇政府考虑到老人的年龄问题，不再安排他守墓，但他却不愿离开，仍住在陵园，打扫陵园，修剪花草，接待前来祭奠红军英魂的人。
