采访中，张彬告诉扬子晚报记者，他的博士生导师对他的另类动手能力——绘画很欣赏。“导师一直说，让我把他最得意的手术心得和要点画下来，将来结集出版，可以给后世当做医学资料。”
目前，张彬主要还是用铅笔和水笔手绘，后期用Photoshop和Fireworks进行处理。考虑到医学绘画有很多解剖部位都是重复的，所以他想要用电脑作图，这样可以把各部分画过后储存起来，以后有用到类似的可以调用修改，为此他自学了一系列图片编辑软件。据张彬介绍，画一幅手绘图，一般都得一两个小时，而简单一点素描画，大约要半个小时左右。当然，如果要画简单一点的示意图的话，可能几笔勾勒一下，也可以了。

据张彬介绍，医学插画设计是近年来新兴的交叉行业，随着信息化社会、数字化医学的推进，市场需求越来越大，医生转行做医学插画的也大有人在，网络上也有一些专业的设计师在尝试参与。但张彬始终认为：“要把专业的医学图画好，最起码，作者应该还是一名临床医生。尤其是外科，只有把手术做精做透，才能体会到关键步骤上的精妙之处，才能把专业图画到位。”
张彬觉得，自己虽然没有设计师画得精美，但让人看过后能有所收获。“希望有一天，我能把教授们没法言传、而其他人又难以领悟到的精髓用绘图笔记录下来，面向专业医生，做更专业、更个性的解剖和手术图谱。自己业余的努力也可以有一点点成就和意义。”
张彬告诉记者，目前已经有一些出版商陆陆续续联系过他，希望帮他出这样的医学画册。但他觉得时机还没到，因为截至目前，他自己比较满意的手绘画还不多，大约也就是有三十多张。“我觉得，可能至少要等我评到高级职称后吧。”采访中，记者得知，今年张彬正向副主任医师发起冲击。
