辅导员初衷：希望同学在课堂上做点有用的事
据“武汉大学”公众号4月5日报道，推出此举的院系辅导员曾表示，如今校园内同学们上课玩手机的现象比较普遍，有很大一批同学看手机是一种不自觉的行为，更多的是一种习惯。“收手机并不是杜绝同学们玩手机，主要是想让大家养成一个不那么依赖手机的习惯。武大虽然以自由之风著称，但自由是相对的，是一定程度上的自由。大学生现在正处于一种世界观、价值观还不太稳固的阶段，这就需要学校和老师外在的作用推动一下。”
这位辅导员还表示，“我知道这项工作的阻力很大，会遭到很多反对，但可以先试试看，摸着石头过河，有问题再慢慢改进。这个事情还需要去进一步把握其中的度，管得太死也会限制学生的个体发展，有待进一步摸索。我们一直以来也在探索尝试提高同学们学习效率的方法，让同学们到教室去，让同学们听课，让同学们学得有效果，这是一个循序渐进的过程。”

一位学院助教告诉澎湃新闻，这一举措主要针对本科生施行，但目前本科生上课还不需要上交手机。至于网上贴出来的“院系配合收手机政策购置的手机袋”其实是班长支书会上的“示范”。
她个人认为：“按目前的情况，估计是难以推行了。”

学院里其实也有学生对辅导员的计划表示理解。该院硕士生陈晓明（化名）告诉澎湃新闻，目前反对的声音还是多的，但他个人对此事是支持态度：“课有好有坏，也不一定全都要听，只是在这个位置，在这个时间段就要做这个时间段该做的事情。学生的职责是学习，课堂上最重要的任务也是学习，学习的方式有很多，但我觉得大部分（学生）使用手机的时间不是在学习。如果自己没有意识到这个问题，有个人帮你认清一下难道不是很好么？”
“而且我觉得这个事情之所以有很大的反对意见，是因为这拨人没有认清自己。有着小学生的自律能力，却妄想大学生的自由，想想看挺悲哀的。”陈晓明如是说，“自由是个很虚伪的概念，而且自由的前提是自律。”
据武汉大学新媒体中心的数据调查，武大学生里认为上交手机不合理的约有45%，认为合理但应自愿上交的达51.61%，认为合理且应强制的仅有3.39%。而另一方面，表示上课不会用手机的学生只有不到3%。比起查找知识点、拍PPT等学习目的，更多学生使用手机是出于社交需求。
