研究主要采取在线调查方式,第一部分包括13项调查,主要用于检测一个人的自恋水平,问题集中在一个人对于自拍的态度、对他人对自己照片评论的在意程度、以及对研究他人的自拍的程度,例如:“我喜欢看镜子里的自己”和“我希望得到应有的尊重”等,测试完毕之后将参与者分成7个等级,7级为最自恋。

接下来研究人员会进行另外一项调查,检测发自拍者对于他人评价的在意程度,这期间参与者只用选择“重要”或“没兴趣”;调查的最后阶段是两个问题,问被采访者“是否会努力更好提升自己的自拍技能”和“是否仍会定期发布自拍照”。

研究结果显示,越是自恋的人越重视他人对自己照片的评论、将他人的评论视为自我提升的一种策略,进而更热衷于发布自拍照;此外,越是喜欢研究他人自拍照的人也越喜欢评价他人照片。
