防护效果级别是根据国家空气质量标准中空气质量类别设置的，由低到高依次分为四级：D级、C级、B级、A级。对应的使用环境为，D级适用于中度（PM2.5浓度≤150微克/立方米）及以下污染、C级适用于重度（PM2.5浓度≤250微克/立方米）及以下污染、B级适用于严重污染（PM2.5浓度≤350微克/立方米）、A级在PM2.5浓度达500微克/立方米时使用。
为保证消费者佩带防护口罩时的安全性，标准要求口罩应能安全牢固地护住口鼻，不应存在可触及的锐利角和锐利边缘。考虑到佩戴者行走时的安全性，标准规定口罩下方视野应不低于60度，避免因口罩拱形设计过高影响佩戴者的视线。
