3月16日，广州番禺警方接到一民众报警，称其儿子小刚在广州某大学请假外出后一直未返校，且失去联系。警方随后展开调查，办案警察从小刚同学了解到，3月3日上午，小刚自称到清远见网友，分别于当天9时、11时在广东省汽车客运站、清远英德市英州明珠广场，向宿舍同学发去了定位地图。在随后的几天里，他们和小刚有着断断续续的联系，但从微信聊天状态看，小刚回复的速度和语气有点异常。一直到3月14日，他们再次给小刚打电话，提醒他回来参加补考，小刚则表示放弃补考，并称过两天就回学校。
小刚父亲告诉民警，3月15日9时，小刚给他打了电话，称自己发生意外，正在昆明一家医院，急需5.8万元做手术。他立即在安徽汇了5万元到小刚的银行卡内，可小刚还继续向他讨要8千元余款，未果后，手机突然关机无法联系。随后，小刚父亲打电话向昆明该家医院核实，未发现小刚住院，遂怀疑小刚被传销组织控制。
警方侦查发现，与小刚在QQ聊天的一名女性好友十分可疑，该名女网友为周某(21岁，广西人)，有重大作案嫌疑。除了周某外，苟某(男，23岁，贵州人)、吴某(男，21岁，贵州人)、姚某(女，30岁，广西人)3人有重大作案嫌疑。
3月31日下午，广州警方在清远英德抓获了嫌疑人姚某，姚某交代其非法禁锢小刚的地点。警方随后控制住周某、余某、苟某等人，并将在传销窝点的小刚成功解救出来。
经警方审讯，该4名犯罪嫌疑人为一个打着“传销”幌子实施抢劫的团伙，他们利用网络交友软件以交男女朋友为由或通过色诱方式，将事主诱骗至英德后，对事主进行非法禁锢，并通过各种暴力或言语威胁手段，逼迫事主“入会”购买并不存在实物的产品，从而达到抢劫事主钱财的目的。
目前，以上4名犯罪嫌疑人已被广州番禺警方依法刑事拘留，案件正在进一步审查中。
