在过去两年多的时间里，魏则西辗转多家医院，病情不见好转，后通过百度搜索找到武警北京市总队第二医院，在花光东凑西借的20多万元后，仍不幸去世。魏则西生前曾在“知乎”撰文，详述此次经过，并称该院为他提供的这种生物免疫疗法，在国外早已因“效率太低”而被淘汰。据报道，该院也并未如宣传中那样，与斯坦福医学院有合作。
原本再过一个月，魏则西就会穿上学士服，拍完毕业照，走向社会，甚至出国去追求自己热爱的计算机事业。他生前曾说，如果大四之后能去美国好好学学计算机，那会是他人生最大的幸福。
遗憾不仅存在于魏则西。

在一班班长梁照铭印象里，魏则西在和同学在课余时间讨论所学知识，相当深入，让他感到魏则西“学识扎实，和其他同学不一样，以他的实力，进入梦想的IT公司没有问题。记得一次考试总分100，他能考到95分。”
魏则西曾和冯洋洋说过，生病休学那一年，他还在写数据结构的程序。杨洋知道，对于大部分人而言，这些知识学第一遍都不是很清楚，要独立写出来，把每一个知识点都弄懂是要下很大功夫的。
到了2015年，魏则西开始经常请假。而在那之前，冯洋洋和梁照铭都没有见过魏则西生病的状态，本来魏则西每天都会去操场跑步，那时的他看上去十分健康。
