据李某交代，他曾经在杂志社工作过，负责接收投稿，找专家改稿、发表，熟悉流程。此后他出来另起炉灶，在网上找人仿照杂志社的网站制作假网页，并找搜索引擎公司，花钱让假网站链接进入前三页的搜索排名，以此蒙骗那些评定职称需要发表论文的人。李某供述，从今年1月开始至被抓，已获利30余万。
目前，包括李某在内的7人被东城警方刑事拘留，警方已核实本市案件5起。
