自卫村依山而居，平房靠山而建。几百户人家并排在村子东侧，西侧是坟地。财神庙居于村落与坟山之间，十多年来蛛网结尘，无人问津。直到六七年前，自卫村村民的农田陆续被征用为建设用地，每家获得数额不等的补偿款，失去土地的村民才想起了那间破烂不堪的财神庙。
“祖宗留下的土地没了，什么都没留给小辈。”王美凤说，当时财神庙外的路上，拉水泥沙石的大卡车经常翻车。村里来了几个风水先生，说，建在“螺蛳壳”地形的财神庙里需要塑一尊佛，方能保一方平安。
