吴海涛当天在第70届联大“宗教促进和平”高级别对话会上发言。他说，不同文明、不同宗教汇聚交融，共同组成多彩多姿的世界大家庭。应促进不同文明、不同宗教间的交流对话，在交流互鉴中共同发展，使其成为增进各国人民友谊的桥梁，推动人类社会进步的动力，维护世界和平的纽带。
吴海涛说，宗教极端思想不是宗教，是暴力极端主义的思想基础。各国应加强对宗教信众、特别是青年信众的正面引导，帮助他们有效抵御宗教极端思想的侵害。应加强网络监管，坚决打击利用网络和社交媒体传播宗教极端思想，确保青少年接受温和、理性的观念和主张。
在打击暴力极端主义和恐怖主义方面，吴海涛说，国际社会应坚持统一标准，对暴力极端主义和恐怖主义零容忍、无差别。无论恐怖活动打着什么旗号、针对哪个国家、采取何种手段，都应予以坚决打击。打击暴力极端主义和恐怖主义不能与特定宗教或民族挂钩。
吴海涛还说，中国政府奉行宗教信仰自由政策，积极倡导宗教间和谐共处。今年3月，中方在博鳌亚洲论坛期间举办“亚洲文明对话会”，促进了亚洲不同文明和宗教的交流互鉴。近年来，中方大力推动共建丝绸之路经济带和21世纪海上丝绸之路，重要内容之一是促进沿线各国不同文明和宗教的对话与交流，实现民心相通。
他说，中方愿继续与国际社会一道，不断推动不同文明和宗教之间的对话与交流，坚决打击宗教极端思想和暴力极端主义，为维护国际和平、促进共同发展作出更大贡献。
