5月2日，天桥岭林业局保护区接到辖区桦皮林场职工的电话称，发现疑似老虎的足迹。保护区工作人员经现场确认，证实为大型雄性东北虎足迹。
天桥岭林区地处长白山脉老爷岭支脉南麓，北与黑龙江穆陵国家级自然保护区毗邻，东与吉林汪清国家级自然保护区相邻，是珲春和汪清自然保护区东北虎扩繁种群寻找新家域的潜在定居地，也是来自俄罗斯的东北虎沿吉林和黑龙江两省交界地带向长白山腹地扩散的关键生态廊道。
据介绍，自2000年以来，天桥岭林业局已先后在内河林场、张家店林场、桦皮林场、八人沟、新开林场等辖区发现野生东北虎活动足迹，充分显示天桥岭林区境内重点区域已经成为濒危珍稀动物野生东北虎的生存、繁衍区域。
天桥岭林业局局长曹永福表示，天桥岭林区虎迹频现，主要是得益于生态环境有了较好的恢复，梅花鹿、麋鹿、狍子、野猪等野生动物种群迅速增加，老虎食物链得以形成。另外，吉林省全面停止木材商业性采伐，实施生态移民，保障了东北虎栖息繁衍的生存环境。
