杨之光于1930年生于上海,原籍广东揭西。1949年师从岭南画派高剑父。1950年考入北京中央美术学院绘画系,接受徐悲鸿、叶浅予、董希文等老师指 导。1953年毕业后任教于广州美术学院中国画系,历任教授、系主任、美术学院副院长。2010年,杨之光获首届广东省文艺终身成就奖。
美术史学家迟轲曾这样评价杨之光:“师从高剑父的杨之光,走的是徐悲鸿的路,深受蒋兆和的影响,绝对是中国画人物画的一流画家。”新快报记者了解到,杨之光在绘画领域探索不止,坚持每日速写和创作,以“借鉴古洋寻我法,平生最忌食残羹”为终身座右铭。
创作于1954年的《一辈子第一回》是杨之光里程碑式的作品,在该作品中,他第一次用新国画样式记录人民选举。
晚年,他又独创性地用没骨法塑造场面宏大的人物群像《九八英雄颂》。
晚年曾将重要作品和手稿全捐出
杨之光晚年把自己的重要作品及4000多件手稿、文献悉数捐献给各大公立美术馆,无私而慷慨地为后人保存了他一生的艺术成果。去年10月15日,在广州美 术学院美术馆及岭南画派纪念馆举办的“扬时代之光——杨之光艺术研究展”展出了杨之光从上个世纪五十年代之后半个多世纪的作品、手稿、文献共1000多 件,展现他严谨、创新的艺术探索历程,以及他为广东美术教育所作出的重大贡献。
杨之光是构建新中国人物画教学体系的奠基人之一。在广州美术学院数十年的教学生涯里,杨之光为美术界培养出一批著名画家,包括林墉、陈永锵、陈振国、梁汝洁等。他的学生们将杨之光的审美情趣、价值理念、创作技法不断发展,使之生生不息。
回顾杨之光走过的艺术人生,广州美术学院美术馆副馆长胡斌表示,杨之光几乎在每个不同时代都有划时代作品的出现,而且与当时的社会生活紧密相关:“他的笔墨语言与造型的结合达到了一个非常自然融合的境界。他创造了和时代进程紧密相连的视觉语言系统。”

②变形是手段而不是目的,目的是为了传神达意。探求不脱离精神实质的“不似”是为了更“似”。齐白石主张作画要在“似与不似之间”,就是这个意思。我极不 赞成游离了对象的精神实质去玩弄所谓变形的游戏。以前有人笼统地把明清的文人画指责为笔墨游戏,未免有些偏激。当前某些画的变形变得谁也看不懂,这才是真 正的游戏。我始终信奉《文心雕龙》中的两句话:“酌奇而不失其真,玩华而不坠其实”,这是画家极好的座右铭。
③在我学画的经历中,书法、篆刻、音乐、文学、戏剧……给我带来了莫大的好处,而且我愈来愈感到这些方面的修养太重要了。画国画,也可以说是在画修养。

新快报:您如何评价自己从教从艺的60多年?
杨之光:我这一生是饱含酸甜苦辣的一生。我祖籍揭西,是地道的客家人;生在上海,但家庭与身世比较复杂。后来,到台湾流浪过,在“文革”中先后两次进牛 棚……我什么苦都吃过,现在年轻人都难以想象,但我人生坚强,什么都不怕,纵使最无依无靠的时候也挺过来了。这种性格让我在艺术上的探索不怕艰辛,一直努 力在创造自我。
新快报:就艺术而言,有人说您是岭南画派,又有人说您是徐悲鸿那一派。您自己到底属于哪一派?
杨之光:我既不属于岭南派,也不属于徐悲鸿派,我是杨之光派。成为独一无二的杨之光,是我艺术上最骄傲的地方。
新快报:您与黄胄、方增先、刘文西被学界称为徐蒋之后的人物画四大家,在您看来,谁的成就更突出一些,影响更大一些?
杨之光:不能说谁的成就更突出,可以说谁的个性最明显,我认为是黄胄。他靠速写成就自己,画面非常生动,连恩师徐悲鸿也充分肯定他。
新快报:人物画家往往在晚年很难有非常大的突破,您怎么看待这样的现象?
杨之光:就现实主义人物画家而言,50多岁是黄金时期,60多岁会出现一个高峰,但过了70岁,再有大的突破就比较难了。这是很正常的规律,我也不例外。造型准确,要依靠体力与眼力,人老了不服不行。最近几年椎间盘突出、高血压缠身,创作难以为继。
新快报:既然现实主义创作难以为继,有没有想过尝试大写意花鸟或人物?
杨之光:我很清楚以目前我的身体状况再攀个高峰有点力不从心,就干脆封笔。现在只有写写书法,只是借此健身养性。
新快报:如果这一生非要说有什么遗憾,您会说什么?
杨之光:我一直想书法入画,但心有余而力不足。
新快报:您还是一位美术教育家,培养了大批美术人才。在艺术家与教育家两个身份之间,您更看重哪一个?
杨之光:我更看重教育家这个身份。培养人才这个工作,更艰巨、更重要,也更伟大,甚至高过自己的那点艺术成就。为此,我晚年创立杨之光美术中心,所有的心思都放那里了。
新快报:您对当前的岭南画坛如何评价?对年轻一代寄何希望?
杨之光:岭南画坛发生的变化太大了,越来越开放,视野开阔,才华都能发挥得淋漓尽致,但问题也不少,比如跟风的毛病比较严重。我希望年轻一代戒骄戒躁,沉下心来做学问。不能有名利思想,名利思想害死人。
