湖南警方通报此事称，经市县两级公安机关调查，5月18日，在邵东县杨桥镇发生一起交通事故，5名伤者被送至邵东县人民医院五官科住院部就诊，三名犯罪嫌疑人系伤者家属，因治疗情况与医生发生争执情绪激动，随后辱骂并用拳头殴打王俊医生，致其重伤，经市县政府和卫生部门组织专家全力抢救无效死亡。
案件发生后，经警方工作，三名犯罪嫌疑人3小时内先后到案和自首。
新京报(微信ID：bjnews_xjb)记者注意到， 5月19日，湖南省卫生计生委下发《关于进一步加强医疗机构安全防范工作的紧急通知》，要求全省各地卫生计生部门和医疗机构加强安全防范工作，防范暴力伤医事件，保障医务人员人身安全，维护正常医疗秩序。
