2016年5月31日下午15：10分左右，湖北宜昌中兴化工有限公司有机硅副产物处理现场物料泄露引发火灾，该公司主营石油化工与化工原料。
接报后，宜昌市猇亭区委、区政府迅速组织安监、消防等相关部门负责人到现场进行救援，经初步查明：是中兴化工氯硅烷发生火灾，燃烧产生氯化氢气体和二氧化硅。
搜狐新闻检索后了解，氯化氢是一种无色非可燃性气体，有极刺激气味，比重大于空气，遇潮湿空气产生白雾，极易溶于水，生成盐酸。而二氧化硅的粉尘极细，部分可悬浮在空气中，如果人长期吸入含有二氧化硅的粉尘，就会患硅肺病。
事故发生后，园区原有通往起火点的道路无法正常通行，为了救援需要，武警交通六支队近40名救援官兵携带5台挖掘机等大型救援装备，紧急赶往事发现场，进行干粉灭火搬用和变道开辟救援。
据介绍，救援需打通一条新的“生命通道”，通往燃烧和冒烟点，便于救援物资由肩扛运送方式改为车辆运送，长度大约200余米。施工救援人员介绍，由于现场是一片荒地，分布着杂草，软泥和水塘，路基松软，施工难度较大。目前正在全力施工中。
据现场救援人员透露，截至31日晚7时，现场明火已经扑灭，浓烟已经基本消除，后续主要是对燃烧物内部进行进一步扑灭，防止复燃。
据现场目击者称，浓烟已经逐渐散去，只有事故厂区还有一些淡白的烟雾飘起，空气中还弥漫着一丝刺鼻的味道。
7时许，“宜昌发布”发布消息称，经环保部门在事故点上风向、下风向六个监测点监测，均未检出特征污染物氯气和氯化氢，烟尘中的主要污染物为粉尘，正逐步下降。
目前，事故原因正在调查中。
