报告对1952-2015年中国大陆、香港和台湾的3000多名省级高考状元展开追踪调查。报告显示，1977-2015年中国大陆状元最青睐北京大学和清华大学；香港地区状元最爱香港大学和香港中文大学；台湾地区状元首选台湾大学。从全国范围看，香港高校已在状元争夺战中落于下风，录取状元不足总数一成。
根据报告，状元中阴盛阳衰的趋势也已显现。2000年以前大陆高考状元中男性占绝对优势，占比均超7成；2000年后，大陆和香港女性优势地位突出，占比超50%。
值得关注的是，除4个直辖市，广州、银川、乌鲁木齐等培养状元人数最多，名列2016中国最盛产高考状元城市排行榜前3强。云南师范大学附属中学培养出38名高考状元，居全国中学之首。

《2016中国高考状元调查报告》对1952-2015年中国大陆、香港和台湾的省级高考状元的性别、姓名、就读大学及专业、毕业中学、所在城市和职业发展等情况，展开调查统计分析，总共追踪到高考状元3000多人。
报告总撰稿人、艾瑞深研究院院长赵德国指出，中国大陆“高考状元”是指大陆地区“全国普通高等学校招生全国统一考试”各省、自治区（不含西藏）和直辖市的最高分得主，调查对象包括原始分状元（裸分状元）、加分状元和复读状元等；香港“高考状元”是指香港“高级程度会考”最优考生和香港文凭试大学联招状元；台湾地区“高考状元”是指台湾地区“高等院校联合招生考试”即台湾大学联考的榜首。调查数据主要通过新闻报道、网络媒体、高校网站、中学网站和杂志书籍等公开渠道获取。
艾瑞深中国校友会网大学研究团队首席专家、中南大学蔡言厚教授指出，2000年以前，在竞争最为激烈的中国大陆和台湾省级状元争夺战中，男性占据绝对优势，占比均超7成；大陆男性占71.05%，女性占28.95%；台湾男性占72.55%，女性仅占27.45%。
而2000年以后，女性在高考中优势地位突出，所占比例超过男性；2000-2015年，大陆状元中女性占52.64%；香港状元中女性占58.22%。
在中国大陆各地区省级状元中，北京市女性最强势，考场称雄所占比例达69.44%，蝉联全国第一；辽宁省列第2，为68.57%；福建省居第3，为66.67%。其中，全国共有19个省市自治区女性比例超过男性，黑龙江、天津、河北、江苏、福建、辽宁、北京等省市女状元比例均超过60%。

艾瑞深中国校友会网连续10年对1952-1999年中国大陆、台湾地区、香港地区“高考状元”的职业状况展开追踪调查与研究，发布最新2016中国高考状元职业成就排行榜。其中，2000年之前的香港高级程度会考状元调查不到相关职业状况信息。
调查发现，1952-1999年中国大陆高考状元和台湾地区大学联考状元就业行业广泛，经济收入和职业地位较高。职业成就平均水平明显高于非状元群体，但成为各行业“顶尖人才”和“领军人物”的偏少。
此外，在学术界、专业技术领域就职的状元职业成就较高，表现突出；经商、从政非高考状元所长，职业发展不突出。
报告显示，1952-1999年中国大陆高考状元和台湾地区大学联考状元中，学界状元的职业成就最高，涌现出中国科学院院士、中国工程院院士、中国千人计划学者、长江学者、美国工程院院士和加拿大工程研究院院士等一批自然科学领域的顶尖人才和领军人才。
毕业后创业经商的状元中，台湾商界状元商业成就表现最优，大陆状元商业成就一般。商界的大陆状元中虽出现了李朱、栗亚和张斌等千万富翁和亿万富豪，但至今无人登上胡润、福布斯、新财富和《财富》等富豪榜和世界500强。
调查发现，毕业后从政的状元中，状元职业发展成就相对而言不突出。相比而言，医疗、文学、传媒、法律、证券和金融等专业技术领域，高考状元的职业成就较高，各行业顶尖人才和领军人物频现。
对于社会上“30年1000余高考状元下场悲惨”一说，蔡言厚指出，这些言论缺乏足够的事实依据，更是对高考状元群体职业成就的严重歪曲。过度解读或误读对高考状元不公平，也不客观。
