新京报记者了解到，事发地位于上庄镇八家村西南部的一个鱼塘。附近一位目击者告诉新京报记者，7日凌晨，先后有两辆车向鱼塘方向开来，前面的一辆冲入水中，后一辆车的人便下车相救。目击者称，两辆车上的乘客来自同一个单位。
在事发现场，新京报记者看到，鱼塘与穿过八家村的一条主干道呈“T”字型交汇，鱼塘周围没有围栏，也没有路灯。
鱼塘附近的一家农庄老板告诉新京报记者，溺亡的四人均来自石景山一家建筑公司，昨天搬家到附近，晚上想找个宾馆歇脚。由于晚上路比较暗，又逢大雨，车辆不慎栽进鱼塘。
