  新华社旧金山6月7日电 美国格鲁伯基金会7日宣布,华裔科学家蒲慕明成为2016年度格鲁伯神经科学奖获得者,他将在今年11月美国神经学学会年度会议期间领受奖章、获奖证书和50万美元奖金。


  格鲁伯基金会认定,蒲慕明作为世界知名科学家,以精巧的实验和创新研究途径,帮助揭示了细胞神经学领域的一些关键“秘密”,尤其是大脑神经环路可塑性在分子和细胞层面的机理,即神经细胞如何依据对现实世界的体验,建立新连接或者改变原有连接强度。


  2015年度格鲁伯神经科学奖获得者、美国斯坦福大学生物学教授卡拉·沙茨说,蒲慕明“极大促进了大家对神经环路可塑性的认知”。


  68岁的蒲慕明现任中国科学院神经科学研究所(ION)所长,还曾多年担任美国加利福尼亚大学伯克利分校神经生物学部教授。


  身在上海的蒲慕明给加州大学伯克利分校发出一封电子邮件,说他对获得格鲁伯神经科学奖感到“荣幸和高兴”。


  他写道:“我对神经环路可塑性进行了多年研究,相当一部分工作在伯克利分校完成,为在治疗脑神经系统疾病过程中采用心理和生理刺激手段提供了依据和途径。特别是我们发现精准时序电刺激某个特定神经通路如何对提升神经环路中突触传递效率发挥关键作用。随着对诱发各种脑神经疾病的特定神经环路障碍的了解日渐增多,以神经环路可塑性为依据、对特定环路施以刺激,或许会成为一种有吸引力的脑神经疾病治疗方法。”


  蒲慕明1948年在南京出生,1970年在台湾清华大学获得物理学学士学位,1974年在美国约翰·霍普金斯大学获生物物理学博士,后在耶鲁大学、哥伦比亚大学等高校任教,2000年任加州大学伯克利分校教授。


  蒲慕明在加州大学伯克利分校的同事、分子和细胞生物学教授马拉·费勒介绍说,蒲慕明早期对细胞膜蛋白运动开展研究时,组合运用物理学和生物学方法论,触发了蒲慕明对神经突触、突触形成及其可塑性的兴趣。突触是两个神经元之间发生联系并传递信息的部位,而突触可塑性与人类学习过程和记忆功能相关。


  费勒还认为,蒲慕明对神经科学所作的贡献,推动了多个研究领域,与神经元连接成环路的各个阶段相关,例如神经细胞的极化(即神经细胞膜两侧的带电状态)、神经肌肉接头的成熟、轴突导向的分子和细胞机制、神经营养因子对突触功能的调控等。


  格鲁伯基金会是公益机构,从2004年开始颁发神经科学奖,2011年转由耶鲁大学运营,所设“格鲁伯国际奖计划”现有宇宙学、遗传学和神经科学3个奖项,每年颁发一次,3个奖项的奖金分别都是50万美元,对奖金使用不作限制。
