承诺将捐出一亿股腾讯股票注入正在筹建中的个人公益慈善基金，支持在中国内地为主的医疗、教育、环保等公益慈善项目以及全球前沿科技和基础学科的探索的马化腾，凭借价值约139亿元的捐赠额首次成为“中国首善”；腾讯创始人之一陈一丹以捐赠40亿元（主要捐建武汉学院以及设立教育奖项“一丹奖”）排名第二；何巧女捐赠自己所持有的东方园林7630万股股权（价值约29亿元）排名第三，同时也成为中国女首善。
本次发布的慈善榜将2015年4月1日至2016年3月31日期间的现金捐赠、和现金相关的捐赠、有法律效力的承诺捐赠以及2016年4月-5月的过亿捐赠都统计在内。若以企业名义捐赠，企业捐赠额乘以企业家所持股份比例后计入企业家个人捐赠。
复旦校友向母校捐赠最多
从榜单来看，前十名慈善家总捐赠额比去年上升50%，达到300亿元，是三年前的5倍多。上榜门槛为1255万元，比去年1200万元略有增长。有27名慈善家捐赠过亿，比去年多了9名，与2008年最高峰的27名持平。
从历年平均来看，教育和赈灾领域的捐赠人数基本保持半数。2016年，教育领域的捐赠人数仍然最多，占46%，比去年又增加2%，成历年之最；其次是捐赠慈善基金会等社会公益方面，占20%，比去年减少6%；第三是扶贫方面，比去年增加2%，占11%；赈灾方面比去年减少2%，占3%。
教育捐赠中主要有校园建设、捐资或成立各类助学基金会、教师学生奖金、帮助困难学生、捐资各地慈善会等。捐赠方向最多的仍然是向母校捐赠，有27名慈善家上榜，向母校捐赠数额最多的依次是复旦大学（受捐8亿元）、清华大学（受捐3亿元）和中国农业大学（受捐2亿元），其他受捐1亿元以上、1.2亿元以下的有北京大学、深圳大学、西南财经大学、中山大学等。
复旦校友会首富、64岁的卢志强过去一年以个人名义向母校复旦大学教育事业项目捐赠7亿元，成为对母校最慷慨的校友，他也以总捐赠额7.3亿元位列榜单第七。此外，非母校的大学教育捐赠也日益增多，其中捐赠最多的有陈一丹捐资20亿元用于武汉学院建设、解直锟捐资2.5亿元在复旦大学建设大数据科学与技术学院。
从行业来看，地产、金融投资和IT是上榜慈善家最多的前三大行业，占据整张榜单的六成。其中，地产行业比去年减少9名，有35名；金融与投资行业比去年增加14名，有33名；IT行业比去年增加7名，有13名。连续两年登上胡润艺术榜榜首的中国最成功在世艺术家、72岁的崔如琢是今年慈善榜上最年长的一位，因为向故宫捐赠1亿元而排名20；26岁的影视明星杨颖是榜上最年轻的，和黄晓明一起以1685万元捐赠额位列第87。这也是胡润慈善榜历年来第一次有艺术家和影视明星上榜。
北京上海排在慈善家城市前两名
从慈善家分布地区来看，北京取代广东成为最多慈善家设立公司总部的地区，有25人上榜，比去年增加10人；广东比去年增加1人，以21人排名第二；上海增加6人，以12人从去年第六上升到第三。从城市来看，北京、上海排在前两名，广州和深圳并列第三。相比上一届，今年浙商增加2人，与粤商并列第一，有12人上榜，粤商比去年骤减7人；闽商比去年减少6人，有8人，排名第三。湖南商人比去年增加3人，有4人上榜，是有史以来最多的一次。
国内企业家对海外捐赠日益见多，有3名企业家海外捐赠过千万。他们是万达集团董事长王健林，2015年度向海外捐赠共1.4亿元；侨鑫集团董事长周泽荣，捐赠6800万元用于扩建悉尼大学博物馆；2011、2012年的首善福耀集团董事长曹德旺，向位于美国的代顿大学捐赠4600万元。
统计显示，上榜慈善家平均年龄55岁，比百富榜上榜企业家平均年龄大1岁，与去年慈善榜平均年龄相同。如果关注一下慈善家的性别可以发现，今年有14名女性慈善家上榜，比去年少4名，也低于胡润百富榜上女富豪21%的比例。另外一个值得关注的现象是，今年上榜慈善家中20%拥有政治身份（十二届人大代表和政协委员），比去年减少6%，但仍远高于胡润百富榜上11.3%的比例。
总体来看，上榜慈善家们的平均捐赠占他们平均财富的1.9%。胡润在解读榜单时认为，中国慈善家最慷慨的捐赠比例在0.5%-2%之间。
本次慈善榜共有3000多位企业家，包括《2016胡润百富榜》上的1877位企业家和《2016胡润全球富豪榜》上的568位大中华区企业家接受调查访问，2016年是胡润研究院自2004年首创慈善榜以来连续第13年发布胡润慈善榜
