举办军官退役仪式，是对转业军官以实际行动支持国防事业的感谢，是对他们为国家忠诚奉献的铭记，是对他们戎马生涯的一种肯定，更是对他们到地方履职尽责的一种激励。军官退役仪式既有利于激发转业干部的荣誉感和归属感，鼓舞他们始终做到退役不褪色，也有利于教育和感染现役官兵更加积极投身改革强军实践，为国防建设尽职尽责。
正是因为举行军官退役仪式具有这么多的意义和作用，近几年来已经有越来越多的部队在自发地举行军官退役仪式，但这些仪式在主题、流程和细则上各不相同，在某些方面也降低了相关活动的仪式感。笔者认为，有关部门对此应当加以研究，对仪式的举行时机、负责部门、主题内容、实施流程等加以细化并形成相关制度规范，以使部队在举行军官退役仪式时有更为明确的参照。
在这些自发举行的军官退役仪式上，最常出现的也是最感人的内容就是向军旗告别和合唱军歌这两项活动。“向前，向前，向前！我们的队伍向太阳！” 最后一次再和战友合唱起军歌，望着早已融入自己血液的鲜艳的八一军旗，转业军官满怀深情地举起右手对军旗敬礼，在感恩、激动与难舍中向朝夕相伴的军营和战友作最后的告别。
