近年来中塞政治交往不断，双边关系逐渐升温。李克强总理和张高丽副总理分别于2014年底和2015年中访问塞尔维亚，塞总统尼科利奇于2015年9月来华出席中国人民抗日战争暨世界反法西斯战争胜利70周年纪念活动，塞总理武契奇于2015年11月对中国进行正式访问并出席第四次中国－中东欧国家领导人会晤。
两国高层互访频繁，可以反映出双边关系不断向好的趋势。目前，中塞两国双边关系处于历史最好水平，习主席此次访问将进一步深化两国在各领域的合作。
塞尔维亚早在2009年与中国建立了战略伙伴关系，也成为中国在中东欧地区的第一个战略伙伴。正如塞尔维亚总理武契奇所说：“塞尔维亚始终是中国可靠的朋友和伙伴。”中塞两国在涉及本国核心利益问题上给予对方坚定支持，是名副其实的战略伙伴。中塞双方在平等、互信的基础上，相互支持、相互帮助，共同维护国际公平与正义。
中塞合作取得的成绩为中国－中东欧国家合作树立了典范，也在一定程度上推动了中欧关系的发展。如：中国企业在欧洲承建的第一个大桥项目——贝尔格莱德跨多瑙河大桥、山东高速承建的位于泛欧11号走廊的Ｅ763高速公路项目、中国机械设备工程股份有限公司承建的科斯托拉茨电站项目以及匈塞铁路等。
近年来两国合作领域不断拓宽，从基础设施建设扩展到能源、钢铁、通信以及金融等领域，合作模式也从贷款转向投资与合资经营，合作内容也将更多地惠及民生，当地民众可以实实在在地感受到中塞合作升级带来的变化。
2015年中塞两国签署《关于共同推进“一带一路”建设的谅解备忘录》，塞尔维亚坚定支持“一带一路”倡议，愿意成为合作伙伴。此次习主席访问期间，中塞将签署一系列政治经济协议，为两国未来发展制定远景蓝图、作出具体规划，促进两国各领域纵深发展，带动两国关系升级。
