　　事实上，丰富的与中国打交道的履历，正是横井裕此番履新最受瞩目的焦点。他是近年来日本政府再次起用的所谓“中国学派”外交官担任驻华大使。在此之前，上一位“中国学派”的日本驻华大使，是2006年至2010年在任的宫本雄二。宫本雄二到中国赴任之时，有舆论曾将之解读为：日本试图修补因日本前首相小泉纯一郎多次参拜靖国神社而陷入冰点的中国和日本关系。
