很多科幻电影需要出现当下不存在的东西，这时，就需要科幻概念设计师提供设计方案。比如《三体》中有段故事发生在“文革后的200年”，所以有大量场景、物品都将是远距离未来的产物。在影视化这部分故事时，即使简单的一个场景，也需要使用大量的特效镜头，“文革后的200年”的街道、建筑、车、宇宙飞行器等等都需要重新设计，甚至服装、手机、电脑都有巨大变化。
目前《三体》只公布了一款概念预告片，在1分02秒的时长里，最有“科幻概念”的设计要数以下这幅图了。但这幅图中红框内建筑却被指抄袭比利时建筑设计师Vincent Callebeut在2008年的作品Lilypad-The Floating City。
