British media said Yang Fenglan has described herself as "model of the friendship of China and Tanzania", but arrived in the African country for the first time in more than 40 years, she was accused of smuggling more than 350 wild elephant ivory, and could face up to 30 years in prison.


66-year old Yang Fenglan seems to be a frail old woman. In Tanzania, she was known as "ivory Queen", and was accused of being a leader of an international smuggling ring, more than 2.5 million dollars worth of smuggled ivory from Africa to the far East.


Court records say Yang Fenglan "purposefully illicit business organization, management and financing, were to collect, transport or export and disposal of" total 1.889-ton "the Government kills", Reuters reported.


She went on trial this week on charges of smuggling 706 tusks from 2000 to 2004. She denies all charges.


Reports said Yang Fenglan was born in Beijing, China in the last century for the Tanzania-Zambia Railway project which focuses on developing the first Swahili professionals.


She acted as interpreter for the project between 1970-1975, and during that time she met her husband, and established a deep affection for Tanzania. Their daughter's name has a "not" Word.


After the completion of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway, Yang Fenglan returned to China. The 90 's of the last century, many Chinese with language expertise while China's rapid globalization boom to look abroad for opportunities.


Reported that in 1998, Yang Fenglan to Tanzania Dar es Salaam, the capital city, in a building in Central opened a restaurant and Beijing wall investment firm.

  2014年,已经成为坦桑尼亚中非商会秘书长的杨凤兰对《中国日报》说:“我不指望餐馆赚钱,而是把它视为中国人和坦桑尼亚人交流、交友、交换信息的地方”。


  不过,非洲的报道说,她在十几年的时间里一直充当非洲偷猎者和中国买家之间的牵线人。


  根据去年的一项调查,东非的大象数量从2009年的11万只减少到了2014年的4.3万多只。
