6月26日上午10：20左右，在宜凤高速公路郴州宜章段长村东溪大桥附近，一辆车牌号为湘D94396、由耒阳开往宜章莽山的大巴车，在宜凤高速K34+145处东溪大桥撞上高速公路中间隔离带，随后又撞向东溪大桥右边护栏，致油箱漏油起火。
此前相关部门通报，事故大巴车核载55人。司机目前已被警方控制。
事故发生后，国务委员、公安部部长郭声琨高度重视，要求全力抢救伤员，查明事故原因，全面排查隐患，切实避免类似事故再次发生。公安部党委副书记、副部长黄明、安监总局副局长孙华山当天率工作组赶到湖南，指导事故调查处置工作。
