Hong Kong's South China Morning Post June 30, topic: the International Energy Agency: smog the Chinese lost 25 months

A report recently released by the International Energy Agency estimates that in China, the energy field causing serious air pollution, the average life expectancy of Chinese people has been reduced by 25 months.

A study on air pollution report by the International Energy Agency estimates that up to 97% of the under exposed to PM2.5 exceeds World Health Organization standards against the Chinese people. This country has about 1 million premature deaths per year may be related to outdoor air pollution.

Reports also said that indoor pollution, mainly from cooking when organic matter and the use of poor-quality fuels for heating, kill 1.2 million people every year.

At the global level, air pollution has become a major public health crisis that raised 6.5 million premature deaths each year.

Executive Director, International Energy Agency Fatih Birol said, although the Chinese Government has been trying to solve the problem of pollution, but because of the aging population of the country for air pollution hazard effects of resistance is very fragile, so still on the increase in the number of premature deaths.

Birol said the IEA have found a low cost strategy to address global emissions. For example, increases in energy investment 7%, used by terminating the domestic combustion of organic compounds and use kerosene, can help the world reduce 3 million deaths in rural areas.

The report estimated that by inhibiting the release of industrial, heavy vehicle and home cooking pollution, together with other control measures, by 2040, China's average life expectancy will increase in 15 months.

Experts said, the Chinese Government has pledged to invest heavily in clean air, but need to make a thorough effort to spend money more efficiently. (Author Li Jing, Mu Yi-translation)
