据介绍，在人的大脑半球中，共分为五个叶：额叶，顶叶，枕叶，颞叶和岛叶。其中，颞叶负责存储记忆，相当于大脑中的“数据库”；枕叶负责识别物体的形状、质地等；额叶几乎涉及所有的心理功能，包括记忆、语言、智力、人格等等。也就是说，哪些信息会存进大脑或者哪些不存，都是额叶“说了算”。
在进行人脸识别时，眼睛接收到的刺激往往会传到枕叶。接着，这些信息就会被送到颞叶中的梭状回面部识别区，并在“数据库”颞叶中进行索引识别，如果看到的信息和人脑“数据库”中的信息相吻合，人就能做出反应，“哦，这个人是某某。”

实验共分为5项，包括指向记忆、联想学习、图像自由回忆、无意义图形再认和肖像记忆，再根据测评结果进行打分。前4项测试中，24位实验对象对词语、图像的认知均得分较高。而在第5项测试中，实验对象在面对人脸时，得分出现明显下滑趋势。
同时，科研人员还对24位实验对象脑部进行磁共振。之后发现，脑部白质神经纤维损坏较多的人，评分相对较低。这就找出了面部识别与人脑白质神经纤维的关系。而一旦人长时间过于焦虑、兴奋，白质神经纤维就有可能受到损伤，甚至病变。“因此，脸盲症的人可以先到医院进行磁共振等相关检查，看人脑中额叶、颞叶等是否有器质性问题。”科研人员说，如果排除有器质性问题，就应该到专业的心理精神机构进行检查，从而判断是否有抑郁等心理状态异常。
