2016年6月4日21时许，事主崔某(化名)在家上网的时候看到了一个“网络交友”网站，注册账号后便有客服主动与其联系，对崔某说充值会员等级越高，内容就越“精彩”，甚至与视频主播单独裸聊或现实约会，并强调充值到最高等级的话账户资金24小时后便可退还，崔某信以为真，当即充值18888元成为最高等级会员。
6月5日22时许，崔某再次上线，却接到网站财务通知，称其充值数据混乱，需再次充值修复数据，否则无法退款。崔某进退两难，只好继续充值，至6月18日按要求又进行了多次充值，合计71.9万元。
6月18日，该网站财务要求再充值26万做最后修复时，崔某终于感觉不对劲，于是咨询朋友才醒悟被骗，遂报警求助，共损失737888元。
白云区警方指出，此类网络交友平台一般会有几个真实的女性主持，先用低价吸引用户充值成为会员，然后根据充值金额设置不同的权限，如普通会员、铜牌会员、银牌会员、金牌会员等，还会承诺可随时退款。普通级别观众，只能看主播表演，不能与主播互动，这时直播间其实是播放预先安排好的视频。而宣称高级用户能与主播互动，却要收取更高费用，这时互动的是真实女性，但对方依然保持“底线”，并诱惑用户升级终极权限来收看主播的色情表演，以此达到诈骗目的。
