江老师回忆，李磊什么事情都愿意抢在前面做。开学时，教室里比较脏，需要有人打扫，她提出来后，有人悄悄溜了，但李磊主动站出来和一些同学把教室打扫得干干净净。经过一个月的观察，江老师觉得这个孩子很刻苦，也很有担当，于是选他当了班长，“宣布的时候同学们都很支持。”接触一段时间后，她渐渐知道李磊家境很不好。有时候几百上千元的学费和生活费都要拖一段时间才能凑齐。一年后，李磊突然找到她，说是想退学去当兵，她劝了好久，但是留不住。
