张家界市中国卫生计划生育委员会表示，从2014年1月输血后，至2015年7月确诊感染艾滋病病毒。此间，患儿在长沙、上海、张家界三家医疗机构住院8次，几次接受过手术。目前，事件各方正通过司法程序解决责任及赔偿问题，张家界市中心血站、张家界市人民医院、湖南省儿童医院、上海交通大学医学院附属仁济医院、山东泰邦生物制品有限公司等5个单位被列为被告。
记者了解到，患儿小宝(化名)于2006年12月出生，土家族，住张家界桑植县。2014年1月3日，小宝因车祸入住张家界市人民医院进行手术治疗，1月4－5日，共输注4袋“○”型去白细胞浓缩红细胞(2U／袋)、4瓶人血白蛋白(5克／瓶)，输血前艾滋病病毒HIV抗体检测结果显示为“阴性”，2014年2月11日出院。
张家界市中国卫生计划生育委员会介绍，除2014年1月因车祸入院外，自2014年4月至2015年6月期间，患儿先后到湖南省儿童医院住院1次、张家界市人民医院住院3次、上海交通大学医学院附属仁济医院南院住院3次，并在长沙、上海等地接受手术。此间，在张家界市人民医院共进行HIV抗体检测2次，2014年6月检验结果显示为“阴性”，2015年7月1日检验结果显示为“待复查”， 2015年7月8日经省疾控中心确诊为“HIV－1抗体阳性(＋)” 。
2015年7月中旬，张家界市卫生计生委接到患儿父母的投诉和张家界市疾控中心反馈的患儿确认HIV感染信息后，要求相关单位迅速对该事件调查核实。同时，通过筛查、检测患儿密切接触者，暂未发现密切接触者感染艾滋病病毒。8月，张家界桑植县疾控中心派人陪同患者家属前往上海等地就诊医疗机构开展了回顾性调查。
张家界市中国卫生计划生育委员会相关负责人告诉记者，经调查，患儿于2014年4月在湖南省儿童医院住院期间，艾滋病病毒抗体检测结果为“待复查”，病历中也有记录“建议其至具有相关资质的医院进一步确诊，追踪病毒”，但当时患儿没有及时到疾控部门进行复查。“不知何故，患儿家属反映当时对这一情况不知情，也没有进行进一步确诊。”
家属认为，湖南省儿童医院2014年4月出具结果为HIV“待复查”，但张家界市人民医院同年6月报告却显示结果为阴性。家属对后者这一结果存在质疑，认为报告有造假可能。但张家界市人民医院回应，所有病历和检查都是信息化管理，是从电脑中调取的原始数据。
张家界市中国卫生计划生育委员会相关负责人向记者介绍，鉴于该起事件时间跨度历经18个月，患儿受伤后先后在3家医疗机构共住院8次，且患儿还有相当部分时间在院外生活，调查感染源及感染途径非常困难，因此他们曾向患儿家属建议其通过司法程序解决责任及赔偿问题。
2015年9月，患儿家属向张家界市永定区人民法院提起了诉讼，张家界市中心血站、张家界市人民医院、湖南省儿童医院、上海交通大学医学院附属仁济医院、山东泰邦生物制品有限公司等5个单位被列为被告。其中，山东泰邦生物制品有限公司是患儿第一次因车祸住院时所输4瓶人血白蛋白的生产厂家。2016年1月5日张家界永定区人民法院一审，目前尚未结案。
