2016年7月9日，马云在首届全球XIN公益大会教育分论坛上表示，自己从乡村教师计划拓展到乡村校长计划。一个校长能深度影响一个学校，希望通过对校长的培训，更好的影响老师，从而影响无数的年轻人。
马云乡村校长计划预计10年投入约两亿元，寻找、支持中国优秀乡村校长。
马云认为，中国有很多乡村的校长缺乏培训机会，怎么激励教师，怎么管理学校，什么是财务，什么是教案，应该怎么运营，他们缺乏这些方面的学习机会，所以自己想把选出来的老师、校长们，送去海外知名学校，跟中学校长们交流学习，去开阔视野、提升理念。
2016年首届“乡村校长计划”将投入1200万元，评选20位全国义务教育阶段的乡村学校校长，每位校长将获得50万元实践经费。入选校长除了将赴国际知名学府学习管理方式、办学理念、教育模式等，还将结成教育网络平台，进行线上和线下交流。教育网络平台由马云公益基金会全新打造，旨在为老师、学生、家长提供一个互联网平台，建立一个没有围墙的互联网学校，一个学习的大社区，一个教育公益的开放式平台，促进中国教育的发展。通过这个平台，老师可以获得更多优质的教学理念/方法/实践，相互交流和学习；学生可以获得更广泛的优质教育资源，学生之间、师生之间相互交流和学习；家长获得适合自己孩子的优质教育资源，学习其他家长的优秀理念和实践；为教育公益提供一个开放式平台，使得施方与受方可以快速发现、连接，使人人公益更加简单快捷。
