若按各国所拥有的可运行（operable）核电机组数量排名，前五位分别是美国（99）、法国（58）、日本（42）、俄罗斯（35）、中国（34），均是能源消费大国。

此前环保部部长陈吉宁曾称，到2020年，中国核电机组数量将达到90余台，从装机容量上讲，将超过法国，成为世界第二的核电大国，仅次于美国。
