Stanford scholar: Chinese College students ' learning without power, all graduate-Stanford, University graduate-IT information

China's education system has been triggered the most heated discussions. Its critics say it is a test-obsessed bureaucracy, training students to be good at rote, but not in other places. Supportive people think, so the children have a particularly solid skills, especially in math and science.

According to the United States the New York Times, August 8, Stanford University economist Luo Sigao organized a project on rural education in China, and he published a new study directed at Chinese school has challenged the popular belief. In a recent conversation, Luo Sigao discusses the advantages and disadvantages of China's education system, as well as his recommendations to the leaders of the country. Following is an interview with the New York Times reporter hehaiwei's summary:

Q : your study found that Chinese students enter college with some critical thinking skills is the strongest in the world, far exceeding the United States and Russia peers. But two years later, they lost the advantage. What's going on?

Answer : there's good news and bad news. The good news is: no matter what they did in high school, whether you recognize it or not, they are making a lot of kids learn math, physics, and some type of critical thinking skills. But what makes me mad is, they don't learn anything in college. Children not studying hard power, everyone can graduate .

Q : high schools than universities do well?

Answer : during high school, parents will be monitored. If the child has not been strictly supervise, they would be the first to call, face-to-face communication with the teacher. In the teacher's view, they allow students to attend classes and pass a huge motivation.

Q : If we appoint you as head of a University in China, you first will change anything?

Answer : in the United States, we will be rewarded because of the good teaching, promotion and salary is to get students home, did well in class, and awards, and publication of research results are equally important, but not so in China. Working with we professors said, "if they graduate anyway, why should we push them? ”

Q : China's many critics have focused on college entrance exams. For the national exam, Chinese students to attend for several years, "spoon-fed" education, because it is the main University standards. While some people think it stifles a child's creativity, did when it comes to the change of the college entrance examination?

Answer : we plan to in the next round of research study on creativity, observation of China and other East Asian students will be a very interesting thing. Many people would say is a fair system of college entrance examination, but that determining life mode require some reforms, we need a certain degree of vacuum, and a more comprehensive focus on training in the teaching of children.

Q : how was the junior high school?

Answer : this is not a teacher posts vacant half of India, nor a teacher cannot improve the quality of teaching in Africa. China has good facilities and excellent teachers, students course of study courses in rural areas and cities alike. So what reason?

Our work clearly shows that really is a problem of individual children in rural areas. Some of them sick, there is correction of myopia, poor nutrition, anemia, intestinal worms. We selected samples in Guizhou province, 40% of worms in the stomach. There are worms in the stomach was how elementary school?

Finally, the journalist hehaiwei said that China's increasingly affluent, increasingly high levels of urbanization.

Luo Sigao says, this is where the irony. Wealth is concerned, China is Asia's fastest-growing economies, but the child is a victim of its own success. China's growing really fast, and the investment in terms of resources and teachers, but they ignore the human element.
