嗅辨员鼻子不“超人”
张超说，自己并不像别人想象的那样有着超级灵敏的嗅觉，而只是一个普通人。“成为嗅辨员最重要的就是鼻子不能不灵，也不能太灵。不灵什么都闻不见，太灵了与普通人差距太大，也会影响判定结果。”在日常生活中，嗅辨员还有不少额外的要求，例如，嗅辨员肯定不能抽烟、喝酒，避免吃辛辣刺激的食物，遇到感冒也不能进行嗅辨。尤其是女性，在工作时绝对不能化妆，不能涂指甲油、防晒霜，被蚊子叮了也不能用风油精、花露水。如果接到检测的通知，那么吃饭时，味道比较“厚重”的食物，比如肉包子也不能吃。
“6个鼻子”采集臭气
记者昨天在北京市环境卫生监测站见到了已经在嗅辨员岗位上工作了11年的张超，他每天都会带着一个抽真空的大玻璃瓶到北京的各个垃圾填埋场、综合处理厂、焚烧厂和转运站去采集味道。收集之后，瓶装“臭气”将被带回实验室，注入密封的袋子中。
张超告诉记者，每次进行嗅辨时，都会由6名嗅辨员和1名判定师组成一个小组。每个嗅辨员会配备3个编号为“A、B、C”的袋子，其中有1个是从垃圾场采集回来的空气样本，另外两个则只装有普通空气。
鼻子比仪器更靠谱
在张超看来，回实验室闻臭也是个技术活。嗅辨员就要对手中的三个袋子进行“闻味儿”，并将判定最“臭”的一个在表格上打钩，无法确定就画圈。最后通过公式，算出样本的臭味是否达到国家标准。“只要闻着臭，就说明排放肯定不达标。我们最希望画‘圈’，因为那说明这个垃圾场的排放是达标的，基本没味儿了。”
张超说，虽然科学检测仪器越来越先进，但机器只能显示数值，无法分辨臭味。而人的鼻子比仪器能够检测到的味道要多得多。比如，仪器只能检测到十几种或是二十几种指标，但是人的鼻子却能闻到几十种甚至上百种味道。
每天至少去3个垃圾厂
全市目前共有50个垃圾处理设施，19个垃圾填埋场、综合处理厂、焚烧厂和转运站，必须保证每个月都去一次。采集回来的样品当天就必须进行嗅辨以防变质。
在实验室空调房中依然满头冒汗的张超最害怕的季节就是夏天，夏天天气炎热，气体更易扩散，虽然焚烧厂的垃圾已经经过严格处理，但空气中依然会夹杂着一些特殊气味。
像是粪便消纳站和一些区的垃圾处理厂，嗅辨员也要保证每季度去一次。这样算下来，嗅辨员每天至少要去3个垃圾处理设施，才能够保证完成任务。
