马云表示，主要出于履行公益捐款的承诺及更好地管理财富目的。以8月19日的收盘价粗略估算，马云即将沽售的990万股股票价值约9.6亿美元，相当于马云所持阿里巴巴集团股权的约5%。

早在阿里巴巴赴美IPO前的2014年4月25日，马云和蔡崇信一起宣布，将成立个人公益信托基金，基金将着力环境、医疗、教育和文化领域。该基金来源于他们在阿里巴巴集团拥有的期权，总体规模为阿里巴巴集团总股本的2%。根据上周五（8月18日）阿里巴巴的收盘价，扣除期权行使成本，上述基金总规模为36亿美元(约240亿元人民币)。

比尔·盖茨对此评价说，“马云先生和蔡崇信先生的慷慨和领导能力，以及他们所树立的榜样，在中国公益事业不断发展的这个关键时刻，将会带来极大的示范效应”。
