今年5月份，当时的腾讯科技记者雷建平曾报道称，京东提交给SEC的文件显示，截止到2016年2月29日，京东集团CEO刘强东通过Max Smart Limited直接持有449,444,989股，占股16.2%。其中，Max Smart Limited持有投票权为71.5%；Fortune Rising Holdings Limited持股2%，有约9.3%的投票权，这部分投票权归刘强东所有。这使得刘强东共拥有80.9%的投票权。
截止到2016年2月29日，腾讯持有京东股票498,850,435股，占比18%，为京东最大机构股东，但只拥有4.2%的投票权。
所以，即使现在腾讯持股比例达到了21.25%，刘强东依然牢牢掌握着京东的控制权。这也符合刘强东展示给外界的形象——强势。

对于腾讯此时选择增持京东股票的意图，雷建平在其个人公众号文章中援引分析人士的话认为：“此番腾讯持有京东股权增至21.25%，一共斥资超过2亿美元。在阿里巴巴增长强劲，京东面临增速下滑之际，腾讯增持有逢低买入和给刘强东及京东打气之意。”
从京东近日的股价走势来看，也验证了这一说法，从8月12日开始，京东的股价开始破除低迷，直线上升。
其实早在2014年，腾讯首次入股京东，用一系列现金和等价资源打包换取京东15%的股权，并拥有京东上市前再增持5%股权的权益和一个京东董事会席位时，虎嗅作者赵楠就曾根据双方的合同分析认为：
“这样看没啥感觉，但从细节发现，原来是腾讯拿少量现金，以及一些亏损的电商业务，和微信与手Q的移动资源，去换未来的京东第一大股东啊！这买卖真精明。

尽管腾讯未来可能成为京东第一大股东，但刘强东依然拥有京东的绝对控制权。根据此前招股书显示，刘强东个人拥有一股20权的超级投票权。
不过，随着腾讯入主京东，京东是否会更改刘强东的投票权设置呢？但不论怎么说，刘强东不会让自己失去对京东的控制权，腾讯也不会不让刘强东来掌控京东。”
受此消息推动，京东美国上市股票盘前上涨3.54%，报26.30美元；截至发稿，京东股价为25.99美元，涨幅为2.32%。
