刘鹏表示，里约奥运会是中国体育第9次参加夏季奥运会，参加了除了手球和橄榄球外的所有项目，运动员年龄也是近3届奥运会最年轻的，“基本上完成了参赛目标”，在8个项目上获得25金（不包括之后女排获得的金牌），120个小项上获得前8，自行车和男子跆拳道奥运参赛历史上首次取得突破。一些项目虽然没得到金牌，但成绩比以往有了提高，有的实现了奖牌“零的突破”，有的创造了最好成绩，如男子柔道90公斤，实现参加奥运会以来奖牌“零的突破”。“参赛的35名奥运冠军，其中12名北京和伦敦奥运会冠军获得里约奥运会冠军，3人连续3届均获得奥运会冠军；在金牌选手中，13人是首次参加奥运会的年轻选手。”
