随着GPU性能的提升，对显存的要求也越来越高，高带宽、低延迟显存成为研发的热点。在这方面，除了革命性的HBM显存之外，现有GDDR显存还会继续升级，美光主导的GDDR5X显存只是过渡版，下一代显存标准将是GDDR6，预计2018年随着DDR5标准问世，速率可达14-16Gbps。
现在的GDDR5显存已经发展到了8Gb颗粒、8Gbps速率，AMD、NVIDIA新一代显卡都已经在用，NVIDIA的GTX 1080显卡还率先用上GDDR5X显存，频率10Gbps，后者也是JEDEC标准，潜在目标速率可达14Gbps，不过GDDR5X只有美光在搞，三星、SK Hynix看起来是没有打算推出GDDR5X了。
在日前的Hot Chips 2016国际会议上，三星公开讨论了后GDDR5时代的显存标准，提出新一代显存速率在14-16Gbps，电压1.35V，简单来说就是在保持时钟频率1.75GHz的情况下，将数据频率至少翻倍。
从三星给出的路线图来看，下一代内存标准预计会在2018年问世，其中DDR5速率超过3Gbps，LPDDR5速率超过6Gbps，而GDDR5频率超过14Gbps，而且新标准会更节能，LPDDR5标准能效提升20%。
