在周永明任内，HTC在Windows CE及安卓智能手机市场上都曾创造过辉煌，革命性的G1手机就是他们做的，早几年间HTC手机在安卓阵营的地位无可动摇，经典型号不胜枚举。但是这些都已经是过去时了，这几年来HTC业绩不断下滑，智能手机不论销量还是影响力都已经大不如前，别说被三星超越，就连国内的华为、小米、OPPO、Vivo也能甩HTC几条街。

他说2011年的时候跟王雪红提出不当CEO了，因为公司要培养后面的人，要给后面的人机会，他自己则会找新东西去做。只不过公司当时还没准备好，王雪红希望他继续留任，这事就拖了好多年。
到了2013年还是没找到合适的CEO人选，后来王雪红要接CEO一职，周永明表示王雪红对营销很感兴趣，他自己会去做一些创新的东西，为公司找到未来。
后面的事就是媒体报道的那样了，王雪红去年9月份担任CEO，周永明表面上负责产品研发，实际上已经离职，去了数字王国，不过这家公司之前是做特效的，现在也做起了VR内容，也算是没脱离他在HTC的工作范畴。
