　　杨敬年1908年11月出生于湖南省湘阴县。1945年，他考取了中国和英国庚款董事会第八届留英公费生，进入牛津大学圣体学院攻读“政治学哲学经济学专业”。

　　牛津大学对学术要求十分严格，对于获得博士学位者，要求其对知识有“原创性的贡献”，当时只有一半学生能顺利获得博士学位。1948年，40岁的杨敬年以《英国中央政府各部门职权的分配（与美国和英属自治领的比较）》通过论文答辩，被授予哲学博士学位，同年起任南开大学教授。

　　任教南开大学后，杨敬年曾任南开大学经济系学位委员会主任、中国对外经济合作学会常务理事等职，入载英国剑桥国际传记中心《大洋洲及远东地区名人录》、美国马奎斯世界名人传记中心《世界名人录》。1998年，90岁的杨敬年翻译完成经济学名著《国富论》，百岁时撰写了自传《期颐述怀》。

　　牛津大学圣体学院院长理查德·卡沃丁近日向107岁的杨敬年教授发来贺信，宣布杨敬年当选为牛津大学圣体学院荣誉院士。查德·卡沃丁表示，“圣体学院的全体师生均以与您保有这层联系而骄傲”。
