动物对于恐惧的记忆很多源自后天习得。著名的巴甫洛夫条件反射实验证明,只要一种声音与恐惧相连,再次听到,动物就会重新陷入惊恐。

此前,科学家认为,这是由于恐惧的信息会从大脑的听觉皮层流向海马末端的侧杏仁核,进而控制运动区域,产生恐惧反应。然而,在浏览小鼠大脑联接图谱的时候,中科院上海生科院神经所蒲慕明课题组的副研究员杨扬和博士生刘丹倩发现,这一过程其实是“可逆的”,侧杏仁核也可以投射回听觉皮层,并且当这个投射被抑制时,小鼠的恐惧反应就会大大降低。

“它说明,只要我们能够抑制从侧杏仁核投射回听觉皮层的神经回路,小鼠就不会害怕此前让它恐惧的声音了。假如我们也能在人脑中找到对应的通路,就可能通过调节这个通路,减轻焦虑症和创伤后应激障碍等疾病。”杨扬说。

蒲慕明表示,这一基础研究的发现可以为脑疾病的治疗提供新的线索。目前药物治疗脑疾病效果并不理想,未来,生理、物理刺激和干预或许能够取得更好的效果。
