村里多位看着李绪义长大的老人回忆，李绪义小时候是个好孩子。长大后，去当了几年兵。退伍回村后，因待人接物很顺和，邻里关系又处得不错，还差点当选村支书。
后来，李绪义从老家李大屯村去了20公里外的大石桥市，开始在城里打拼。他的父母也进了城，承包建筑工程。
李绪义有两兄弟，弟弟也在大石桥做买卖。婚后，李绪义有了一个儿子，今年已经12岁。
关于李绪义出事的原因，多位邻居认为，他这次干的傻事，可能与“三角债”有关，“债是李绪义父母搞基建欠的”。
多位邻居透露，李绪义父母在外承包工程建设期间，发包方一直拖欠着工程款。李绪义父母为了支付农名工工资，四处借资，有些甚至是高利贷。“去年冬天，他父母还回村找我借了房契，说拿去抵押可以借五万元。就这样，拆东墙补西墙才熬到现在。”一位刘姓女士说。

关于这份工作，记者在当地采访期间，还了解到另外一个说法——李绪义陪父母向某政府部门讨债时，有关领导获知李绪义没有正式工作，于是给他介绍了这个运钞车司机的工作。但这一说法，目前尚无法核实。
李继敏介绍，当时在运钞车上，侄子李绪义威胁同车三人，要这三人自己将自己绑起来。之后，李绪义让这三人下了车。他独自开车来到了丰华颐和村小区，进小区后，将运钞车开进了地下车库。
